Long Beach Physical Therapy

When Hands-On Physical Therapy Is More Than a Technique

If you are a Long Beach patient looking for physical therapy with a strong hands-on component, you may already know that not every manual therapy approach is the same.

Manual therapy is more than performing a technique on the area that hurts. What matters is understanding what you are feeling, determining which physical findings may be relevant, and deciding how those findings should influence treatment.

At Focus On Health, advanced manual therapy has been a foundation of our approach for nearly four decades. Extensive postgraduate education and hands-on experience have shaped how we assess mobility, soft tissues, scars, joints, neural mobility, and relationships among different areas of the body.

Those findings are considered together with your symptoms, movement, strength, previous injuries or surgery, functional limitations, physical demands, and goals.

The technique itself does not make treatment individualized. The clinical judgment behind when, where, and why it is used does.

Focus On Health is located in Newport Beach—not Long Beach. Patients who travel from Long Beach are often looking specifically for our combination of advanced manual therapy, integrative physical therapy, extensive experience, and individualized rehabilitation.

Looking Beyond Long Beach — Some patients travel to Focus On Health in Newport Beach when advanced hands-on physical therapy and an individualized integrative approach are important to them.

Advanced Manual Therapy Adds Another Layer of Information

Physical therapy may include observing movement, measuring strength and mobility, and assessing how the body responds to different activities.

Hands-on assessment can add another perspective when considered together with objective measures and other components of the physical therapy examination.

Skilled palpation and manual assessment may provide additional information about joint mobility, muscles, fascia, scars, soft tissues, neural mobility, and other physical restrictions.

A finding does not automatically require treatment simply because it is present.

The important question is whether it appears relevant to the pain, movement limitation, or functional problem that brought you to physical therapy.

For some patients, advanced hands-on treatment may play a significant role. For others, strengthening, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular rehabilitation, movement retraining, education, or another rehabilitation strategy may become more important.

Hands-on skill helps us gather information. Clinical reasoning helps us decide what deserves attention.

Integrative Physical Therapy Gives Us More Ways to Help

Focus On Health is not built around a single manual therapy method.

Postgraduate training at Focus On Health includes approaches such as:

  • Myofascial Release
  • CranioSacral Therapy
  • Visceral Manipulation®
  • Neural Manipulation
  • Vascular Manipulation
  • Manual Articular Techniques
  • Scar and Adhesion Treatment
  • Lymphatic Drainage Therapy
  • TMJ Rehabilitation
  • The Feldenkrais Method®
  • Redcord Therapy and Neuromuscular Activation (NEURAC)

Treatment may also incorporate therapeutic exercise, strengthening, neuromuscular rehabilitation, balance and coordination work, movement retraining, functional rehabilitation, patient education, and an individualized home program.

Having more treatment options allows us to respond to what we find rather than forcing every patient into the same approach.

One person may need greater attention to mobility restrictions. Another may need strength, balance, or neuromuscular rehabilitation. In more complex situations, the emphasis may change as symptoms, mobility, strength, and function change.

Integrative physical therapy allows treatment to remain flexible, individualized, and focused on what appears most important for you.

When Something Still Remains

Many patients who come to Focus On Health have already made progress.

Physical therapy may have helped. Strength may have improved. Surgery may be well behind you. An exercise program may have been followed carefully.

Yet something may still interfere with the activities you want to do.

Perhaps mobility remains restricted, symptoms return with activity, or work, exercise, recreation, travel, or everyday tasks still feel more difficult than expected.

That does not necessarily mean previous treatment was unsuccessful.

Your physical needs may simply have changed.

At Focus On Health, we want to understand what is limiting you now rather than automatically repeating what has already been done.

Sometimes progress depends on taking a closer look at what remains.

Hands-On Treatment Should Support What You Want to Do

Manual therapy is important at Focus On Health, but hands-on treatment is not the final goal.

The goal is what those changes help you do.

Improved mobility may need to be followed by strengthening. Better joint or soft-tissue mobility may need to be incorporated into movement. Balance, coordination, neuromuscular rehabilitation, endurance, or progressive activity may become increasingly important.

For another patient, the goal may simply be sitting, walking, driving, working, sleeping, exercising, traveling, or managing daily life with fewer physical limitations.

Hands-on treatment should support the larger rehabilitation goal—not become disconnected from it.

Physical Therapy for Common, Persistent, and More Complex Physical Problems

Focus On Health works with patients experiencing a wide range of musculoskeletal, movement-related, and functional problems.

Physical therapy may address a wide range of impairments and functional limitations. These may involve, to name just a few:

  • Neck, back, spine, and rib cage
  • Shoulder, arm, wrist, and hand
  • Hip, knee, foot, and ankle
  • Muscles, joints, fascia, and other soft tissues
  • TMJ, pelvic-region, and pelvic-floor physical impairments
  • Sports injuries, repetitive-use problems, and post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Scar restrictions, neural mobility limitations, weakness, balance, coordination, and other functional problems

A diagnosis can provide useful information, but it does not tell us everything about how a physical problem affects you.

Focus On Health evaluates and addresses physical impairments, pain, mobility restrictions, movement limitations, neuromuscular impairments, and functional problems that are appropriate for physical therapy.

Nearly Four Decades of Hands-On Experience

Focus On Health has served patients since 1988.

Over nearly four decades, our approach has continued to develop through hands-on patient care, extensive postgraduate education, specialized manual therapy training, teaching, continued study, and clinical experience.

Experience can help us recognize more possibilities.

It can also teach us to be more selective.

A physical finding that matters greatly for one patient may have little importance for another. Likewise, a treatment strategy that was useful in one situation may not be what the next patient needs.

Experience is not simply knowing more things to do. It is developing better judgment about what may be worth doing—and what may not be.

Over the years, physicians, surgeons, dentists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals have referred patients to Focus On Health.
